2. Activity Sheet: We have two printable Writing Activity sheets . One with prompts and one without, so you can choose which is most suitable for your pupils.

3. Example poem: The Writing Activity is inspired by Donna’s ‘What is Happy?’ poem, which she will share in the video. You can also download it below if you wish to have a hard copy.

Video Timings

  • 0:00 – 3:30 min – Introduction. Meet Greig and Donna, who talk about the aim of the workshop and how writing can help us to express our emotions and be kind to ourselves.
  • 3:30 – 5:25 min – Poetry reading from Donna of ‘Messy Threads’ to share how writing helped her to understand and manage big emotions when she was young.
  • 5:25 – 9:50 min – Introducing the Writing Activity. Greig introduces the Writing Activity, where children create their own poem about a feeling, using our worksheet. The Writing Activity is inspired by Donna’s poem ‘What is Happy?’ Donna provides guidance on how to let your creativity flow and reads the example poem ‘What is Happy?’
  • 9:50 min – Offline writing time for children to write and illustrate their poems. Pause the video here.
  • 9:50 – 10:25 min – Wrap-up from Greig.
  • 10:25 – 12:00 min – Final reading from Donna of the poem ‘Youier.

  • Discover how sharing words and stories can strengthen empathy and connection with others.
