These beautiful poems were written by Grace in Year 5 and Jude in Year 3, both the winners of our Kind Poetry Challenge, run in celebration of National Poetry Day and in collaboration with our wonderful charity patron, Donna Ashworth.

As part of their prize, Grace and Jude’s classes had a very special video call with Donna. They stood up bravely and read their poems aloud.

Donna said “What a joy it was to watch the winning poets stand up and read their work with such confidence and belief. And to watch the way the other children supported and asked such emotionally intelligent questions was even more joyful. All of the entries were simply wonderful and it warms my heart to see this generation diving in with such enthusiasm. What a thing.”

Donna also shared something special with them – a brand new poem on kindness from her upcoming book, and these lucky children were the first in the world to hear it! They also chatted about writing, creativity, and the power of kindness.

A huge thank you to every single child who put pen to paper – your words made us smile and reminded us how powerful kindness can be. You are all winners in our eyes!

Poetry is a really great way for children to express their thoughts using beautiful language. Not only does it help expand their language skills and creativity, but it’s super fun to create! Most importantly, a lot of poetry can help teach children valuable lessons about friendship, respect and kindness.

Donna wrote an amazing poem, ‘You’, about the power of kindness and the difference we all make every day without even realising it. Donna provided a lovely video for the School of Kindness, which you can watch here.
